Compositions: We will write three (3) critical essays. The last critical essay will require some outside secondary sources of criticism. Their length will vary depending on your ability to develop and illustrate your ideas and inspirations with prose; however, I'll expect between four (4) and seven (7) pages for the critical essays. Your "final" drafts must be word-processed on white, non-erasable paper, 8 1/2 inches x 11 inches. The format and documentation of all final drafts will follow the style in the MLA Handbook (4th ed., 1995). From the course website, you may download a Microsoft Word template for the way I want you to format your essays. Lastly, I will accept NO LATE PAPERS. Unless you have negotiated an agreement with me ahead of time, you must either give them to me at the beginning of class, submit them as e-mail attachments, or deliver them to my mailbox BEFORE CLASS on their due date. No exceptions. If you find you are having trouble keeping up with the schedule and the amount of writing, PLEASE come and talk to me before it is too late to find options. I will do my best to help anyone who feels s/he is sinking, but it may require extra effort on your part. Electronic Discussion Forum: Each week, I will give you some study questions. You must choose one of those questions and post your response to the classs electronic discussion board by midnight Friday. Then by midnight Sunday, you must read and post a response to one of your classmates original responses. These will help to facilitate discussion in class on Monday evenings. Writing Center: The Writing Center, located in 2028 across the bridge, is a resource for students to receive help on their compositions. Particularly, you can bring your essay to the Writing Center and work on a specific skill, such as finding a thesis, organization, expanding your ideas to name a few. While the tutors will not "clean up" or "fix" your essay, they can assist you in spotting patterns of mistakes that you make so that you can learn how to find and fix them yourself. Please visit the hyperlink to the Writing Center on the English Departments Web pages at: Book Reserve: During the semester you may be required to read materials I have placed on reserve in the library. Although this semester, our library is in a transition period as it sits inside the glacier on the quad. As a result, the library will have limited holdings for your immediate access, so you need to use other libraries like CSU, Fullertons or UC Irvines. Final Exam Anyone who does not take the final exam will earn an F grade and will risk not passing the class. If you do not take the final exam, the highest grade possible is a C, assuming you ace all the other required work. Grading Policy: Your final grade is based upon how well you fulfill all of your student responsibilities, which are the basic requirements for this course.
